To mark the 150th anniversary of Pablo Casals, Jorge Jiménez explores Bach’s Cello Suites through Ferdinand David’s 19th-century arrangements for solo violin.
In 1939, Casals left Catalonia and went into exile. During his years between Prades and Puerto Rico, Bach remained at the heart of his musical life, culminating in the creation of the Prades Bach Festival in 1950.
This programme brings together a remarkable chain of musical journeys: Bach’s music travelling across centuries; Ferdinand David transforming the Cello Suites for violin; Casals carrying Bach with him into exile; and Jiménez, born in Barcelona and now living and working abroad, encountering the music from his own position between cultures and places.
A programme about music, exile and belonging — and about the extraordinary ability of Bach’s music to cross borders, generations and instruments.

JORGE JIMENEZ
Jorge Jiménez is a Spanish violinist recognised for his expressive artistry and versatility, performing repertoire from the Middle Ages to the present day. Founder and director of Tercia Realidad and first violin of ensembles such as L’Arpeggiata and Forma Antiqva, he has appeared worldwide as soloist and director, including at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. His discography includes releases on Atlantic Records, Naxos, Hyperion, Pan Classics and GWK Records, with highlights such as Lunaris (2021) and El violín de Farinelli, winner of the prestigious Sello FestClásica 2023.
