Beethoven Homecoming

Before recordings made symphonic music universally accessible, arrangements allowed Beethoven’s revolutionary works to travel far beyond the concert hall. His symphonies were heard and performed in salons, homes and cafés, where they became part of everyday musical life.

Beethoven Homecoming returns the symphonies to this intimate world through Hans Sitt’s remarkable 1886 arrangements for violin and piano. The vast orchestral scores are transformed into concentrated chamber versions, revealing the extraordinary detail, energy and imagination of Beethoven’s music from a completely different perspective.

Rather than treating the symphonies as untouchable monuments, Sitt’s arrangements remind us that great music has always survived through reinterpretation, adaptation and transmission. Heard in this form, Beethoven’s symphonies become intimate, immediate and newly alive.
